NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026: Collectible Design takes over an old airport terminal

NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026

An old airport terminal is becoming one of Abu Dhabi’s most intriguing design destinations. NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026 returns from 18 to 22 November, transforming the former Terminal 1 of Abu Dhabi International Airport into a showcase of collectible design, contemporary art, and craftsmanship. Following its debut in 2025, the fair is expanding with new international galleries, Emirati collaborations, and a hospitality programme that extends beyond the airport. Here is what makes this year’s edition worth discovering.

NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026 returns to Terminal 1

The NOMAD Abu Dhabi design fair returns for its second edition in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, bringing together international galleries, designers, artisans, and cultural institutions from 18 to 22 November 2026.

Founded by Giorgio Pace and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, NOMAD is a travelling fair known for presenting art and collectible design in distinctive architectural settings. Previous editions have taken place in destinations such as St. Moritz, Venice, Monaco, and the Hamptons.

The 2026 Abu Dhabi edition builds on its inaugural success with a broader gallery programme, new site-specific commissions, and institutional partnerships. Rather than focusing solely on design objects, the fair explores how materials, craftsmanship, architecture, and cultural traditions influence contemporary creativity.

Why an old airport terminal is part of the NOMAD experience

The setting is one of the most fascinating aspects of NOMAD Abu Dhabi. Designed by French architect Paul Andreu and opened in 1982, Terminal 1 was once a major gateway to the UAE capital. Its tent-like roof, arched walkways, and distinctive blue-green tiled interiors make it a remarkable example of modernist architecture.

Unlike conventional exhibition halls, the former airport brings its own character to the presentations. Spaces once associated with arrivals and departures now accommodate contemporary furniture, sculptural objects, and artistic installations. The building is not simply a backdrop; it becomes part of how visitors experience the works.

By returning to Terminal 1, NOMAD also gives new cultural purpose to an important piece of Abu Dhabi’s architectural heritage. This relationship between the venue and its contents is what sets the fair apart from more traditional design showcases.

The galleries and collectible design to watch at NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026

The NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026 galleries programme brings together internationally recognised design specialists and newcomers introducing fresh perspectives on materials and craftsmanship.

Leading names include Nilufar, Gallery FUMI, Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Galerie Gastou, Galerie BSL, and Rossana Orlandi. Together, they represent a range of approaches to collectible furniture, decorative objects, and contemporary design.

Several first-time participants add further interest:

  • Maison Intègre (Burkina Faso): Bringing contemporary bronze furniture and objects to the UAE.
  • Vein (Seoul): An emerging gallery making its NOMAD debut.
  • ÆQUŌ Gallery (Mumbai): Known for commissioning contemporary designers whose work engages with India’s rich artisanal traditions.

Returning exhibitors The AP Room and Iwan Maktabi + Don Tanani will also participate.

For collectors and design enthusiasts, this Abu Dhabi collectible design fair offers an opportunity to explore pieces that sit between functional objects and artistic expression. Rather than simply browsing furniture, visitors can discover how designers transform traditional materials and techniques into contemporary works.

Emirati craftsmanship meets international creativity

One of the defining themes of the 2026 edition is its focus on Emirati craftsmanship and cultural exchange. New projects by House of Artisans and Irthi, alongside the first presentation of Design Commission Abu Dhabi, will highlight the relationship between traditional making techniques and contemporary design.

A major development is the collaboration between the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and House of Artisans. The partnership introduces an annual programme exploring connections between international designers and Emirati master artisans.

The first commission features Abdel Al Tayeb, recipient of the 2026 IMA Design Award, collaborating with Emirati artisans on a large-scale installation. The project highlights how traditional craftsmanship can inspire fresh ideas across the NOMAD Abu Dhabi exhibitions.

Beyond the fair: NOMAD’s new hospitality experience at ERTH Abu Dhabi

The 2026 edition introduces an exciting partnership with ERTH Abu Dhabi, bringing another dimension to the fair’s cultural and social programme.

During NOMAD week, ERTH will become the official NOMAD Hub, hosting a curated series of breakfasts, dinners, conversations, and evening gatherings. The hotel, designed by French architect Roger Taillibert, is also home to a Michelin-starred Emirati restaurant, making it a fitting setting for an experience connecting design and local hospitality.

At Terminal 1, ERTH will operate the official NOMAD Pop-Up Restaurant, allowing visitors to experience Emirati cuisine within the historic airport. The hotel will also host a major installation from the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, extending the artistic programme into another architectural landmark.

NOMAD Abu Dhabi and the city’s growing art scene

NOMAD arrives during an important period for Abu Dhabi’s cultural calendar. The Abu Dhabi art season 2026 also includes the inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi, taking place from 19 to 22 November at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

With the two fairs overlapping, November offers collectors and art enthusiasts an opportunity to explore contemporary art and collectible design across different venues. Saadiyat Cultural District, home to Louvre Abu Dhabi and other major cultural institutions, adds further depth to the experience.

Together, these developments reflect the city’s expanding appeal as an international cultural destination, offering new opportunities for visitors seeking distinctive art, design, and luxury experiences in Abu Dhabi.
