A Bigger Ally Pally: What to expect at the World Darts Championship 2026/27
Contents
The World Darts Championship 2026/27 will move from Alexandra Palace’s West Hall to the Great Hall for the first time, welcoming more than 5,000 spectators per session and around 180,000 fans across the tournament. Running from 11 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, the new World Darts Championship Great Hall era brings a bigger scale to the familiar Ally Pally atmosphere.
From the West Hall to the Great Hall
Alexandra Palace has hosted the PDC World Darts Championship since 2007, with the West Hall becoming synonymous with Christmas darts, fancy dress, player walk-ons, and packed tables close to the stage. From the 2026/27 edition, however, the championship crosses into the substantially larger Great Hall.
The move is part of a wider agreement between the PDC and Alexandra Palace that will keep the tournament at the London venue until at least 2031. Rather than relocating the championship as demand continues to grow, the PDC is expanding it within the same historic complex.
That gives the World Darts Championship Great Hall move particular significance. The surroundings may be different, but the event remains at the venue that has shaped its modern identity for almost two decades.

A bigger Ally Pally: More than 5,000 fans per session
The clearest difference will be scale. The Great Hall setup can accommodate more than 5,200 spectators per session, compared with a previous limit of around 3,200. Across the tournament, approximately 180,000 tickets are available, increasing access by more than 40% compared with previous editions.
The expanded World Darts Championship capacity could make some of the tournament’s biggest moments feel even larger. Player walk-ons, match-winning doubles, nine-dart attempts, and the final will now unfold in front of thousands more spectators.
However, for fans accustomed to Ally Pally darts, the appeal has always come from the concentration of energy in the room. The Great Hall gives the PDC an opportunity to take that atmosphere to a much larger audience while retaining the character that made the championship distinctive in the first place.

What will the Great Hall experience be like?
Spectators in tiered seating can expect some practical improvements. The new setup features wider seats, increased legroom, and individual cup holders, offering a more comfortable experience during sessions that can stretch across several hours.
The familiar combination of tiered seating and tables will remain part of the championship environment, while the larger room should make the entrance of the leading players particularly striking. Later rounds, including the semi-finals and the final on 3 January, will therefore have a noticeably different visual scale from previous Ally Pally editions.
Yet bigger does not necessarily mean less atmospheric. Much will depend on how the crowd adapts to the new room when the first darts are thrown in December. The World Darts Championship 2026/27 will provide the first real indication of how the famous Ally Pally atmosphere translates to the Great Hall.
A new World Darts Championship ticket ballot
The venue is not the only major change. The World Darts Championship ticket ballot was introduced for 2026/27, replacing the traditional first-come, first-served process amid exceptionally high demand.
Ticket allocation took place through two stages in September. PDCTV annual members received an initial priority ballot from 1 to 7 September, followed by the general-public ballot from 8 to 14 September. It marks the first time World Championship tickets have been distributed using this system.
Combined with the increased World Darts Championship capacity, the new approach is intended to give more supporters an opportunity to attend one of the 36 sessions across the festive period. Demand nevertheless remains significant, particularly for the later knockout rounds and final.
What stays the same at Ally Pally?
Christmas and New Year will still provide the backdrop. Alexandra Palace will still fill with fancy dress, chants, walk-on music, and the distinctive mixture of serious competition and festive celebration that has made the tournament one of the most recognisable occasions on the darts calendar.
The location remains important too. The championship stays in North London, maintaining the connection between Alexandra Palace and the sport that has developed since 2007. The move therefore feels more like an expansion of the Ally Pally darts experience than a reinvention of it.
For returning spectators, 2026/27 will offer the chance to experience a familiar tournament in a completely new room. For first-time visitors, it will be the beginning of what is set to become the championship’s Great Hall era.
