At the centre of Black Rock City, the Man will rise above Cryptomeria, a pavilion designed by Alexander “Zander” Rose.

Inspired by Japan’s Cryptomeria trees, particularly the ancient Jōmon Sugi cedar on Yakushima, the structure reflects ideas of longevity, nature, and connection.

Root-like pathways lead to an external staircase rising nearly 60 feet towards the Man, while a second staircase descends through the centre to form a DNA-inspired double helix. The design offers the clearest architectural interpretation of the Axis Mundi theme.

2. Temple of the Moon

The Temple has long served as one of Black Rock City’s most reflective communal spaces. In 2026, that tradition continues with the Temple of the Moon, created by James Gwertzman and the Moonlight Collective.

Inspired by the one-night bloom of the Queen of the Night cactus, the design reflects the Temple’s temporary nature. Its construction will also follow the lunar cycle, progressing from a new moon towards a full moon.

Spanning approximately 170 feet, the structure will feature 8 gateways, winding pathways, and a central form with crown petals designed to open at sunset and close at sunrise, creating spaces for private reflection and collective remembrance.

Temple of the Moon is inspired by the one-night bloom of the Queen of the Night cactus.

3. Above and Below

Created by Sean Orlando, Above and Below explores how structures can become places for community, imagination, and connection.

The project considers the relationship between the environments people build and the memories, intentions, and values placed within them. Nature, adventure, spirituality, and technology all inform its wider concept.

The installation also reflects a recurring idea across Burning Man art: A structure can offer more than visual impact. It can create shade, encourage interaction, hold collective memory, and become a temporary meeting point within the playa.

4. Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire

Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire offers a technological interpretation of the 2026 theme. Created by Sergei Konchekov, the installation features ascending conical forms and programmable light rings that send waves of illumination upwards before fading into darkness.

The work sits between architecture, sculpture, and digital performance. Rather than remaining visually static, its identity will change over time as light travels through the tower.

Across the vast deep playa, the spire will act as a visible landmark that helps participants find their bearings. Its changing light patterns combine physical design with digital technology, creating a shared focal point in the desert landscape.

5. Do Baskets Dream of Shores or Sea

Do Baskets Dream of Shores or Sea brings the imagery of Vietnam’s coastline into Nevada’s desert landscape. Created by Luke Lin and Auroborium, the installation features seven traditional bamboo basket boats moving through an imagined sea of lanterns.

The journey begins at a dock with a layered soundscape and a poem presented in three languages. As participants move deeper into the work, the lanterns grow denser, the sound fades, and the sense of a familiar shoreline gradually disappears.

At the far end, a single boat and lantern form a quieter final scene. The contrast between handwoven coastal vessels and the ancient desert floor gives the installation a distinctive visual and emotional presence.

6. TITANIC

A wooden ship split into two sections will appear to sink into the playa as part of TITANIC, a monumental project by the Titanic’s End collective.

During the day, participants can climb the structure, gather on its amphitheatre-like surfaces and watch performances. At night, interactive lighting and flame effects from the twin funnels will transform the installation.

TITANIC could become one of the most photographed Burning Man 2026 art projects, combining fire, light and participation with a deeper message about environmental limits and technological overconfidence.

7. Aikido: The Mothership Connection

Artist Zak Ové combines ancestry, architecture, and Afrofuturism in Aikido: The Mothership Connection, a rocket-like structure shaped by African and diasporic visual traditions.

Its base recalls the earthen architecture of the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali, while illuminated masks, Haitian Veve symbols, Masonic forms, and references to Western consumer culture rise towards a monumental Mende female mask at the top.

By bringing heritage, craftsmanship, and imagined futures into one vertical form, the installation explores African cosmology and diasporic identity across different cultures and historical periods.

Aikido: The Mothership Connection combines ancestry, architecture, and Afrofuturism.

8. LOOKOUT!

Rising 48 feet above the deep playa, LOOKOUT! appears as a fire lookout tower disguised as an enormous fire extinguisher.

Created by Franzi Ponzi and the Homo Erectors, the installation uses exaggerated scale and absurdity to draw attention to fire, changing landscapes, and the increasing impact of wildfires.

By transforming a familiar safety object into a desert landmark, LOOKOUT! combines humour with environmental commentary while retaining the playful spirit of Black Rock City.
