The British Museum Ball 2026 will take place on Saturday, 17 October, bringing together artists, collectors, patrons, cultural leaders, and prominent guests for an evening of art, performance, fashion, and philanthropy. Set within one of London’s most important cultural institutions, the Ball is expected to become a major highlight of the city’s autumn social calendar.

The red theme and three global cultural moments

The theme and visual identity of the British Museum Ball 2026 will be red, inspired by the earliest pigment known to have been used by humans for artistic expression.

Red also provides a visual connection between three major displays in the Museum’s autumn 2026 programme:

  • The Bayeux Tapestry: A landmark loan from France, featuring red throughout its embroidered wool.
  • The 250th anniversary of the United States: A special display represented by the red stripes of the American flag.
  • 2,000 years of Korean creativity: A landmark exhibition highlighting rich red tones across centuries of Korean art.

Together, these three cultural moments will shape the Ball’s theme and connect different histories, artistic traditions, and regions of the world.

What is the purpose of the British Museum Ball?

The British Museum Ball is organised to raise funds for the Museum’s future development and public programmes. Proceeds from the 2026 event will support the British Museum Masterplan, a project focused on restoring its historic buildings, improving the galleries, protecting the collection, and creating a better visitor experience.

The Ball will also support school visits to the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition by using additional donations to fund free packed lunches for participating children, helping make cultural experiences more accessible to younger audiences.
