The London Film Festival 2026 returns from 7 to 18 October for its landmark 70th edition, presenting 251 films, shorts, series, and immersive works from 88 countries. With 33 world premieres alongside major international and UK debuts, the programme brings together established filmmakers, rising talent, and anticipated releases. The BFI London Film Festival 2026 will once again stage its headline galas at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, placing major premieres at the centre of 12 days of cinema.
Opening and Closing Night: Elsinore and The Debut
The festival opens on 7 October with the European premiere of Elsinore, directed by Simon Stone and starring Andrew Scott as actor Ian Charleson preparing to play Hamlet at the National Theatre. The Opening Night Gala takes place at the Royal Festival Hall.
On 18 October, Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut closes the festival with its UK premiere. The premiere stars Julianne Moore alongside Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey, and Jesse Eisenberg in a story centred on the intense world of community theatre.

The biggest London Film Festival 2026 gala premieres
Beyond the opening and closing nights, the London Film Festival galas feature major directors, high-profile casts, literary adaptations, and several films arriving in the UK for the first time. These are six of the standout titles to know.
Artificial
Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial explores OpenAI’s origins and Sam Altman’s temporary removal as CEO, with Andrew Garfield starring as Altman. The film screens at the Royal Festival Hall on 11 October, making it one of the most topical additions to this year’s programme.
Bunker
Florian Zeller’s psychological thriller Bunker stars Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. The story follows an architect whose decision to design a luxury bunker for a tech billionaire begins to destabilise his seemingly secure life and marriage. Its Royal Festival Hall gala takes place on 10 October.
Ink
Danny Boyle directs Ink, this year’s Mayor of London’s Gala, with Jack O’Connell, Guy Pearce, and Claire Foy leading the cast. The film explores a key period in Rupert Murdoch’s Fleet Street career and the transformation of the British newspaper industry. The UK premiere takes place at the Royal Festival Hall on 12 October.

Behemoth!
Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! is the BFI Patrons’ Gala, with Pedro Pascal starring as a classical musician whose personal and professional life unfolds across orchestras, relationships, and the film-score world of Los Angeles. Olivia Wilde, Eva Victor, and Will Arnett also appear in the film. Its international premiere is scheduled for 13 October at the Royal Festival Hall.
Prima Facie
Cynthia Erivo stars in Prima Facie, Susanna White’s adaptation of Suzie Miller’s acclaimed stage play. Erivo plays Tessa, an ambitious barrister whose view of the legal system shifts when she experiences it from the other side. The gala screening takes place on 13 October, adding one of the year’s most anticipated stage-to-screen adaptations to the London film premieres 2026 programme.
Klara and the Sun
Taika Waititi brings Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun to the screen, with Jenna Ortega playing Klara, an artificial friend chosen to become a companion to a young girl. Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Steve Buscemi, and Natasha Lyonne also feature. The film’s gala screening at the Royal Festival Hall is set for 15 October.

World premieres beyond the headline galas
Some of the most interesting London Film Festival 2026 films sit outside the major red-carpet programme. This year’s 33 world premieres include new British productions, adaptations, animation, and television projects, giving the festival a broader role as a launch platform for new work.
Anthony Wonke’s In the Shadows brings the story of champion boxer Ramla Ali to the screen. Carol Morley’s 7 Miles Out adapts her semi-autobiographical novel about adolescence, grief, friendship, and music in Stockport. Sean Mathias’ Frank and Percy, meanwhile, is an adaptation of the West End play about an unexpected relationship later in life.
The world-premiere programme also extends into series. Michael Winterbottom reunites Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon for The Trip to the Northern Lights, the fifth instalment of their travel and comedy series, this time taking the pair across northern Europe.
Why the 70th BFI London Film Festival matters
The scale of the 2026 programme reflects how far the festival has developed since its first edition seven decades ago. This year includes 251 titles from 88 countries, comprising films, shorts, series, and immersive works. Alongside 33 world premieres, the programme includes 16 international premieres and 20 European premieres.
The anniversary edition goes beyond screenings, with Screen Talks featuring leading filmmakers and performers, alongside competitions, special presentations, free events, and immersive experiences.
Together, the breadth of the programme and the concentration of major London Film Festival premieres make the 70th edition an important moment for both international cinema and London’s autumn cultural calendar.
