Biggest NBA Games 2026-27: Dates, stars & rivalries

The biggest NBA games 2026-27 go beyond star power, with banner night at Madison Square Garden, NBA Cup 2026, Christmas Day, and NBA Rivals Week 2027 shaping the calendar. From LeBron James’ new chapter in Philadelphia to Luka Dončić leading the Lakers, these are some of the NBA games 2026 and NBA games 2027 that stand out for their storylines, rivalries, and sense of occasion.

1. Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks — 20 October 2026

Madison Square Garden, New York | 7:00 PM ET

Few NBA opening night 2026 fixtures carry as much history as Philadelphia’s visit to New York. Before tip-off, the Knicks will raise their 2025/26 NBA championship banner to the Madison Square Garden rafters, marking the first new Knicks title banner since 1973.

Once the ceremony ends, attention shifts immediately to the new season. New York begins its title defence against a transformed 76ers team featuring LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. For LeBron, it will be the first regular-season game of his Philadelphia chapter after the end of his eight-season run with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The combination of championship celebration, a major Eastern Conference matchup, and one of basketball’s most famous arenas makes this far more than a conventional season opener. For guests considering NBA VIP tickets, banner night also provides one of the season’s most distinctive opportunities to experience Madison Square Garden.

2. Golden State Warriors vs Los Angeles Lakers — 21 October 2026

Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles | 10:00 PM ET

One night later, the Western Conference takes centre stage as Golden State visits Los Angeles for the Lakers’ home opener.

Stephen Curry and Luka Dončić provide the headline matchup. Curry averaged 4.4 made three-pointers per game last season, while Dončić averaged 4.0, making them the only two players to average at least four made threes per game in 2025/26. Dončić also enters the campaign as the previous season’s scoring leader.

For Los Angeles Lakers, it is also the beginning of a different era. After eight seasons with LeBron, the Lakers now move forward with Dončić at the centre of the franchise, and a nationally televised home opener against Curry and the Warriors provides an immediate marquee stage.

3. Miami Heat vs New York Knicks — 27 November 2026

Madison Square Garden, New York | 7:00 PM ET

The Black Friday meeting between Miami and New York gives NBA Cup 2026 one of its most compelling Group Play finales.

The Knicks enter as the reigning NBA Cup champions, while Miami Heat arrives with Giannis Antetokounmpo leading its new-look roster. The fixture closes East Group B play on the final night of the Group Play phase, placing a long-standing Eastern Conference rivalry inside the NBA’s in-season competition.

The date adds to the appeal. A Friday evening at Madison Square Garden over Thanksgiving weekend makes this one of the easiest major NBA games 2026 to incorporate into a longer New York stay.

4. San Antonio Spurs vs New York Knicks — 25 December 2026

Madison Square Garden, New York | 12:00 PM ET

The NBA Christmas Day 2026 programme begins with a rematch of the previous season’s NBA Finals.

San Antonio returns to Madison Square Garden after the Knicks defeated the Spurs to win the 2026 championship. The matchup brings Jalen Brunson and Victor Wembanyama back onto the same court in the arena where one of the defining games of the Finals took place.

The setting makes the occasion even more distinctive. Christmas basketball has long been one of the NBA calendar’s signature traditions, and the 2026 slate begins at noon in Manhattan before continuing with four further games across the country.

5. Philadelphia 76ers vs Los Angeles Lakers — 25 December 2026

Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles | 5:00 PM ET

Later on Christmas Day comes one of the season’s most personal storylines: LeBron James returns to Los Angeles.

LeBron spent eight seasons with the Lakers before leaving in 2026, winning the 2020 championship and setting numerous career milestones in purple and gold. On Christmas, he returns to Crypto.com Arena for the first time as a Philadelphia player.

The game also brings together a star-heavy group featuring LeBron James, Luka Dončić, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and Austin Reaves. For LeBron, who already holds the NBA record for Christmas Day appearances and points, the occasion adds another chapter to his long association with the holiday schedule.

6. Los Angeles Lakers vs New York Knicks — 30 January 2027

Madison Square Garden, New York | 8:30 PM ET

January brings NBA Rivals Week 2027, running from 26 to 30 January and featuring 12 games across five days. The Rivals Week Saturday programme ends with Los Angeles visiting New York.

Lakers-Knicks may not carry the same divisional history as Celtics-Knicks or Lakers-Celtics, but it brings together two of the NBA’s most internationally recognised franchises in Madison Square Garden. The Saturday-night slot also makes it particularly attractive for travellers looking to build a New York weekend around basketball.

For New York Knicks, it is another major date in a season already filled with headline home fixtures. For the Lakers, the game takes Luka Dončić and the post-LeBron team into one of basketball’s most recognisable settings.
